"Venus and the Ark" - Group C

I completely agree Randal.  I felt the same after finishing the poem.  You know, Sexton might have been trying to recreate Noah's Ark in a more modern light.  It is like she is saying that if we continue on this materialistic and selfish path that humanity has subconsciously chosen, God/Fate will wipe us out and begin life anew.  In our time, a simple flood would not suffice.  We would have to wipe out the entire planet until it became unbearable and start life somewhere else, which is exactly what the poem depicts.  Furthermore, in Sexton's view, man would have to be completely wiped out of the picture.  I feel she thinks our very instinct is what created such dire circumstances and so the whole evolution process would need to be restarted.

On another note, at the end of the poem, when two of the fish sprouted legs and a fruit dropped, could that be a biblical reference to Adam & Eve?  There are snakes, greenery, trees, the similarities are plenty.
