Venus and the Ark- Group C
I agree with what everyone has been saying. The poem is extremely elaborate and as I was reading it, I envisioned a luscious green land filled with lots of greenery and animals. I also seemed to notice that Anne Sexton alluded to biblical stories as I read. At first, I did not realize that the title, "Venus and the Ark" was referring to Noah's Ark. I like how Anne Sexton modernized the story and was able to use it to help readers understand what was actually going on. One thing I noticed in the poem was her use of "on the seventh month." In the Bible, when talking about the creation of the world, similar phrases were used. For example, it said "on the seventh day...", but in this poem she wrote "on the seventh month." I think she made it really clear that she was alluding to the Bible in most of the poem. Something else I noticed that I found interesting was that the two male Ph.D.'s brought along rather unattractive organisms which turned to a beautiful scenery. They brought snakes, rats, insects, and fish instead of more appealing organisms that one may think of to create a beautiful landscape.
